“Find Beauty in your flaws”- Kintsugi Yoga Studio
The Japanese art of ‘Kintsugi’ teaches that broken objects are not something to be hidden but to be displayed with pride. This traditional Japanese art uses powdered gold lacquer to join pieces of a broken pottery and to enhance its brokenness. The technique consists in joining fragments and giving them a new, more refined finish.
In Dubai, Kintsugi Yoga Studio uses this ideology as a base to invite us to transform our lives. Seeing Kintsugi as a metaphor for life, Garishma Daga has launched ‘Kintsugi Yoga Studio’ in Business Bay, Dubai. The yoga studio had an “invite only” soft opening on 31st of August 2018. They had 200+ yogis visiting them and subsequently also had free classes for two weeks.
Dhanya AK in conversation with Garishma Daga and Anjaan
Garishma says, “Inspired by the Japanese ideology of embracing flaws, Kintsugi Yoga Studio is a space where vulnerabilities are celebrated and imperfections are appreciated and even seen as beautiful. I stay fit and have experienced several kinds of fitness regimes. But, I saw body shaming everywhere and wasn’t comfortable with this. Our society has ended up setting some norms about how bodies should look. This motivated me to spread the beautiful message, which Kintsugi offers that – broken is beautiful! I have been practising yoga for the last ten years and no other fitness regime worked for me like yoga did. Yoga satisfied my soul. Yoga meets you where you are and thus I knew yoga was the best platform to apply the philosophy of Kintsugi. I believe, this is our calling and a chance to fulfil my commitment towards the society.”
Garishma continues, “Our yoga classes are a blend of traditional yogic practices and modern styles. Kintsugi Yoga Studio offers visitors experiential rooms including: The Origami Room, The Samurai Room and The Zen Salt Room for a salt therapy session with yoga. All teachers are certified and experts in their respective styles. Kintsugi Yoga Studio welcomes people from all walks of life, of all shapes and sizes for the acceptance of these differences, forms the essence of this contemporary brand.
At present we have 12 to 15 trainers from different nationalities. We have chosen them based on their ability to replicate the ideology of Kintsugi. All our teachers are highly qualified and trained. The classes range from traditional styles like ashtanga, hatha, vinyasa, unique classes for mothers and children, swing yoga, dance yoga, acro yoga and speciality classes like Tai Chi, Qigong, Zazen meditation and Pranayama. We also offer private classes and yoga at home. We will also have separate classes for kids, teens, men, women and the elderly.”
Anjaan, general manager of Kintsugi says, “Kin means gold, and Tsugi is joinery. The studio is built on the concepts behind the Japanese art of Kintsugi (or golden joinery) - where broken ceramic ware is lined with gold to make it look more beautiful. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. This Japanese themed yoga studio aims to be the home for people who would like to “fix” themselves using yoga, meditation and mindfulness. It is a space to heal, let go and truly rejuvenate and relax through acceptance. Kintsugi yoga studio is built on the ideology that if something is broken or perceived as flawed – it should be seen as beautiful. We help our students to find the strength in vulnerabilities and the beauty in brokenness. Kintsugi is for everyone.”
“Three factors make Kintsugi different from other yoga studios in Dubai – Our brand ideology of accepting everyone, 20+ classes per day from 06 AM to 09 PM and The Himalayan Salt Room. And, Kintsugi is an eco-friendly studio. We use non chemical mats, paper cups, etc. Soon, we will announce yoga classes in dierent languages as well – Arabic, Russian, Hindi and French. In addition, there will be lots of events, workshops and TTC’s (Teacher Training Courses) at Kintsugi. We have already announced a unique yoga and Ayurveda retreat to Kerala, India for National Day 2018.”
The Zen Salt Room
The piece de résistance of Kintsugi Yoga Studio is the signature Himalayan salt room. The ancient and therapeutic practice of salt therapy is a natural treatment. The unrefined rock salt is derived from evaporated ancient lakes and seas and sourced from deep underground caverns and is used to promote healthier skin, sounder sleep, improved physical fitness and overall wellness. The Zen Salt room at Kintsugi Dubai is modelled after the caves that have been in existence for hundreds of years.
Garishma says, “We are the only yoga studio in Dubai with a Himalayan salt room. Kintsugi offers a unique controlled micro climate room where you can relax and let the Himalayan salt work its magic. The Zen Salt Room is a therapeutic and healing space. All classes are gentle. In this room, you get the benefits of both salt therapy and yoga. While practicing yoga, your breath deepens and allows the salt air to penetrate even deeper into your lungs. The cleansing property of salt enhances lung function and stamina. The room has entire walls built from pink Himalayan salt brick. We also have a Halo-generator, a device that grinds and gently disperses pharmaceutical grade salt particles into the air for effortless absorption. You can also sit down or lie down and meditate on our loose salt beds. And, as the only yoga studio in Dubai, with a Himalayan Salt Room, we would love to invite you to visit us and explore the benefits of salt therapy.”
