Horse yoga comes to Dubai
A new kind of wellbeing activity has entered Dubai in the form of horse yoga. It involves a combination of meditation, yin yoga and an up-close-and personal experience with a four-legged beauty.
Recently, a one-day yoga retreat at the Bab Al Shams resort witnessed a horse-human connection session whereby the participants had a chance to bond with the animal.
The equestrian programme was facilitated by yoga expert Amanda Cunliffe-Smith and Master Certified Equus Facilitator Kelly Eide.
“Yoga and horses may at first glance seem like they’re really different but there’s actually a great amount of overlap,” Eide tells a local newspaper. “They both come under the umbrella of connection.”
The session started with participants being introduced to a horse. They were encouraged to analyse the animal’s response to them and the stages that led up to a connection being established.
Eide added, “When you meet a horse, they look at you, there’s an awareness and they make a decision on how they are going to react, whether they are going to meet you or back away. A communication is happening all the time without words.”
The main takeaway of the exercise is an awareness of a non-verbal exchange. It teaches you to be more aware and connected to the people around you and in your relationships.<<< BACK
Desert Warrior Challenge at Al Qudra
Gear up to break a sweat in winter with the Desert Warrior Challenge at the Al Qudra lakes. The adventurous obstacles will certainly test your endurance.
The day-long challenge kicks off at 7am on January 11, offering participants the option to complete 20 gruelling tasks along a 10km track. However, the tasks are not as simple as jogging or jumping over hurdles along the track. The tasks require both mental and physical strength with climbing, crawling, hanging and swinging.
While the ‘Fearless Warriors’ should complete more than 12 obstacles within 5km, children aged six and above can take on eight obstacles along a 1km or 2km track.
Some of the obstacles are the beast, the humungous slide and the tricky ¼ pipe. These are made to get your adrenaline pumping in the desert. The spectacular view, however, will be a soothing consolation.
The challenge, which started in 2014, has gained huge popularity among the Dubai residents. “The Desert Warrior Challenge is one of our oldest and most popular events. As we move towards our goal of making Dubai one of the most physically active cities in the world, we expect another spectacular show from Dubai’s fitness warriors,” states Dubai Sport Council, that is supporting the event in association with LivFit by Oman Insurance.
The participation fee is AED 411 and online registration is on at www.desertwarriorchallenge.com/registration<<< BACK
Crown prince’s fitness dream inspires millions
It was collective enthusiasm and competitive spirit that brought together around a million Dubai residents from all age groups and backgrounds to be part of the month-long fitness activities that ran between October 26 to November 24 this year as part of the Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC).
With a great need to balance out our urban and often unhealthy lifestyles with some form of exercise, the challenge required participants to commit to at least half-an-hour of physical activities for 30 days (thus the 30x30 challenge). The initiative, which had involved a series of 250 events across the city and offering over 8,000 classes and activities, also transformed Dubai into the most active city in the world.
DFC was launched in 2017 by His Highness, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammmad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai. A lover of sports, the crown prince called on Dubai residents via Twitter(https://twitter.com/HamdanMohammed/status/1051467176463486976) to take the challenge. Not only was it the highlight of the year for the city, it also had a transformative impact on the entire country as the residents showed interest in adopting a healthier lifestyle.
Additionally, this year, DFC’s mobile app helped connect fitness enthusiasts internationally too. Speaking to a local newspaper, His Excellency Saeed Hareb, General Secretary of Dubai Sports Council said, “We saw participants from all over the UAE accepting the challenge. With the initiative gaining popularity on an international level and engaging participants from across the world.”
The fitness festival offered something for all participants with its range of energising outdoor activities including ‘Color Run’, ‘XDubai Spartan Race’, ‘Daman City Swim’, ‘X3JR Triathlon’ and ‘Emirates NBD Unity Run’ among others. While several families participated in fun and competitive events held at five themed Fitness Villages, others sweated it out in their homes, offices, gyms and schools.
Celebrities were not far behind in taking up the challenge as well. Gold medallist Sir Mo Farah, Australian fitness guru Emily Skye and local host Kris Fade showed up at various events to help motivate the participants. Also cheering the participants were local ambassadors like ‘Marathon Man’ Marcus Smith and Team Angel Wolf.
For kids, the event also offered a range of fun activities at the city’s hotspots. One among such events was the 30x30 Disney workout where children and teens were inspired by their favourite superheroes.
The carnival did not stop there. Both private companies and government offices also joined the fitness spirit by hosting an array of physical activities for their employees. For a change, staffers were seen taking time out for brisk walks instead of smoke breaks. Participants also enjoyed working out with the cityscape in the background and even on sandy beaches.
While the fitness app helped participants connect, explore activities and track their workout progress during the month-long festival, it will continue to help fitness enthusiasts with their exercise routines and provide information on various fitness programmes taking place across the city.
Keeping in mind the desire to work out in style, the DFC website has also put up some cool merchandise like sippers, bag packs, yoga mats and T-shirts at reasonable prices.
Regardless of age, the fitness festival helped connect people from various nationalities and professions by encouraging them to try and incorporate a healthy balance between work, education and a healthy life.<<< BACK

The campaign aims to help breast cancer survivors in the country through their recovery process by offering three women free breast aesthetic surgeries. Commenting on the Breasthetica campaign, Dr. Dilshaad Ali, Group CEO, Avivo Group, said, “Breast cancer is a tough battle to fight; physically, emotionally and psychologically. Through Breasthetica we not only want to spread awareness about the disease, but we also want to empower women to regain their confidence, and have happy and fulfilled lives, like everyone else. Breasthetica is Avivo’s contribution to society. Besides providing access to such specialized surgery to deserving patients, we see this as an opportunity for us to raise awareness that there is life after cancer, especially when detected early.”
Breasthetica will be led by Aesthetica Clinic Dubai – an Avivo Group Enterprise that focuses on anti-aging, aesthetic medicine and plastic surgical procedures.
Dr. Laila Al Jassmi, Advisor Breasthetica initiative said: “This year alone, over 4,500 people in the UAE were diagnosed with cancer, and within that more than 20 percent were breast cancer cases. This should give us an idea of how essential it is for every woman over the age of 40 to go for regular screening. Early breast cancer detection allows for more treatment options and better chances of survival. The UAE government is also making strident efforts to promote early detection through different health authorities in the UAE. Through Breasthetica, we want to complement the government efforts in raising awareness in the country and play our role towards early detection and curing breast cancer.”
Dr. Mario Russo, Director Medical Affairs, Aesthetica Clinic, said: “Aesthetica clinic aims to raise breast aesthetic surgery awareness in the UAE by educating women that they can rebuild their self-confidence through permanent aesthetic based procedures. The psycho-social aspect of recovery has often been related to the physical appearance post cancer treatment. Globally, breast cancer awareness campaigns have been very successful but post-mastectomy recovery has yet to gain awareness. Breast aesthetic surgeries in post-mastectomy women can play a critical role in aiding recovery, well-being and improving self-confidence. Our role at Aesthetica is to use the best and most advanced means and resources needed to make people look beautiful for breast cancer survivors, to help them feel complete, gorgeous and happy.”<<< BACK

Change 'you are wrong' to 'you are different': Sister Shivani
'Awakening Harmony and Happiness with Sister Shivani’ was held yesterday at Dubai World Trade Centre.Internationally-acclaimed inspirational speaker Sister Shivani led around 4,650 attendees to a special evening filled with inspiration and uplifting experiences at the Dubai World Trade Centre's Sheikh Saeed Hall 1 on Saturday (October 6, 2018) during her public talk on the topic 'Awakening Harmony & Happiness'.
Sister Shivani's clarity in her thoughts, words and deeply calming stage presence created a powerful ambience during the three-hour event and engaged the multicultural audience and people from different walks of life - from CEOs to housewives, professionals and students - to a journey of self-reflection. She led the audience into inquiring their view of right and wrong within relationships and advised to start changing one's vocabulary from looking at right and wrong to accepting that we are different; incorporating a guided meditation of self affirmation in between.
"We are just changing one word: from you are wrong to you are different. We both are right but different," she said.
Organized by Roots Events, under the initiative of Raja Yoga Center and supported by the Consulate General of India, this major event was aimed at elevating awareness and engaging more people on how to tap these highest aspirations within everyone.
Prior to Sr. Shivani's talk, several special guests which included H.E. Mr Vipul, Consul General of India in Dubai; Ret. Lt. Col Mohammed Murad, and Raja Yoga Center Director Sister Jyoti shared their messages for the occasion.
Ret. Lt. Col. Murad said during his welcome address that it is important to understand how harmony and happiness can build a foundation and without them, it is impossible to function as normal human beings. Having worked for 20 years in challenging scenarios as part of his role, he realized that it is important to look after the wellbeing of those people working for emergency services. "Happiness is nothing but harmony working in the background."
Chief guest Consul General of India His Excellency Vipul, highlighted the important teachings of Raja Yoga in India and the popularity of Sr. Shivani, citing how many of her followers in Dubai got excited upon hearing her visit. He remarked that great souls in the past such as Mahatma Gandhi and souls in the present time such as Sr. Shivani shall uphold the heritage and culture of India.
The Consulate General of India had earlier announced that the event is one of its first supported activities in line with a two-year programme commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation of India.
Sr. Jyoti, Director of Raja Yoga Center who has guided thousands of practitioners in Dubai for decades, explained: "If I am clear that I want to experience positivity in my life and relationships, then I need to invest time and effort in improving the quality of my thoughts. While there are many temporary methods to help us do so, it is meditation that provides a permanent solution."
Roopesh Nambiar, CEO, Roots Events and organizer of the event, commented: "The UAE is keen on promoting happiness and has also appointed a Minister of State for Happiness and launched the Happiness and Positivity Programme. We, being part of the UAE, want to make our own contribution to this great initiative. We are delighted for the opportunity to partner with Raja Yoga Center and organize a beautiful event like this for the people."<<< BACK

Michael Phelps recommends Talkspace
Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has announced a partnership with Talkspace. Usually when you see decorated Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, it’s generally in replays of Herculean feats in the pool, or atop the podium as a glinting medal is laid around his neck. Phelps took a break from his mostly swim-centric Twitter feed to announce his partnership with Talkspace, an online therapy company, citing his own periods of depression. If you’re an avid listener of podcasts, chances are you’ve heard of Talkspace. A public endorsement for this, or any kind of mental health help from an athlete of Phelps’ prominence is significant. Phelps has spoken about his mental health in the past, where he acknowledged the stigma surrounding athletes who acknowledge needing help. “I think people actually finally understand it is real. People are talking about it and I think this is the only way that it can change,” he said to CNN in January. Phelps isn’t the only athlete with Maryland ties openly discussing mental health in the past week. Former Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. posted a column on NFL.com last Tuesday to discuss his own career-long struggles with depression. At the tail of his piece, he also urged anyone dealing with mental illness to seek out therapy as well. <<< BACK
Britney Spears fights jet lag with yoga
When you are traveling a lot, it can take a toll on you. Not only is it detrimental for your skin and sleep but sitting in a tiny airplane seat can really cramp up your body and make you feel, well, tight all over. That’s not something that jet-setting celebrities get a VIP pass from dealing with, either—they feel it, too.
Take Britney Spears, for example, who travels across the world for musical tours and vacations with her family. On a recent Instagram post, the pop star reveals that the staying in a foreign hotel and being away from home can make her feel out of touch. “Traveling from hotel to hotel can make you a little stir crazy,” writes Spears in her caption. “I decided to start doing two hours of yoga in each room!” says Spears. “The bare floors gave me a pretty solid grip on the ground without a mat.”
One glance at her Instagram and you’ll see plenty of gym selfies, workout videos, and dancing—so of course she gets loose when she is far away from home and in small places.

India agrees to trade Yoga for South Korea’s Taekwondo

Both sides liberalized their services market under an upgrade of the free trade agreement (FTA) signed during the recent visit to India by the President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in. Under an early harvest of the comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) review, both sides agreed to allow yoga and taekwondo to be traded under the four modes of services.
This would mean Indian yoga institutions can set up branches in South Korea and Korean hospitals can seek opinions from yoga experts for particular ailments, said Pralok Gupta, an expert on services trade at the Centre for WTO Studies of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade.<<< BACK
